Sixth Grade Tetons Science School Field Trip

About

Each school year the sixth graders have the opportunity to travel to the Teton Science School (TSS) in Jackson, WY for five days to explore and learn about the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). This field trip comes at the conclusion of the final unit in the student’s sixth grade science class, Ecosystems, and provides the students with hands-on lessons and experiences tied directly to what they’ve studied in the classroom. This trip takes place at the end of the school year around April / May.

Hands-on Learning

While up in the Tetons, students go out on adventure hikes, study plant and animal adaptations, learn how to track animals present in the GYE, and participate in a service-learning project.

Service Learning in Action

Each year, the students learn about stewardship of the GYE and participate in a project aimed at improving the GYE. In past years, students have planted trees, analyzed beaver habitats for potential re-introduction, and cleaned up trails.

Tetons Science School does have medications on hand and you can indicate on the TSS online registration which medications the TSS may administer to your child as needed.

Parents that wish to send medications that the TSS does not have on hand, may turn medications in to the Lead Chaperone for administration as directed. Nothing can be administered to your child without prior written consent (e.g. prescription, over-the-counter, cough drops, allergy medication, etc.) and your child may not self-administer any medications on this trip.

Please note that expired medications may not be administered—start checking now and make note of any medications that may need to be renewed prior to the field trip. Additionally, all medication must be in original container or prescription bottle with child’s name on it.

Students with as-needed inhalers need to fill out an inhaler specific form in order to keep their inhalers with them and to self administer—inhalers will be checked by a chaperone at the start of the field trip. Additionally, students with as-needed EpiPens will need to fill out an EpiPen specific form.

We love having parent chaperones attend the Tetons Science School (TSS) Field Trip! We aim to take around 8 chaperones each year—the number of chaperones we can take each year changes and is dependent upon available beds, available rooms, and the number of field groups.

If you are interested in being a chaperone on the TSS field trip, there will be two mandatory meetings. First, at the beginning of the year in September where we discuss chaperone expectations, deadlines, and requirements for attending the field trip. No chaperone will be considered if they are not in attendance at this meeting. It is only after this initial meeting that you may submit your name for the chaperone lottery. The second mandatory chaperone meeting will occur about three weeks prior to the trip as a final meeting in preparation for the trip.

Once we have all student registration forms turned in and we have worked with the Tetons Science School to determine the number of groups and rooms available, then we may begin pulling chaperone names. This happens around the end of November/ early December. We continue to pull parent names in rounds until we have filled all available chaperone spots.

Once your name has been pulled as chaperone, you will be contacted by the Lead Chaperone and given the applicable forms for you to fill out (e.g. Trip Agreement Form, TSS Online Registration Form, Medical History Form, etc.).

Each year we gather supplies that we will put in our field group first aid kits, snacks for the bus ride, and other needed supplies. About six weeks prior the trip, we send out a sign-up link for parents to sign up for donations. We are grateful each year for parent donations in helping us prepare for the trip.

Sign-up link — coming March 2025
