power hour

Power Hour classes are scheduled on Friday mornings at 9:15-10:00 AM. Students in grades three through six will be introduced to a broad range of topics offered by the staff. Parents are encouraged to become active participants in Power Hour. If a parent has a specific topic of interest they may team up with a teacher and offer one of the courses together. The teachers will choose subjects they are interested in exploring with a group of students.

Each term the power hour sessions will run for six weeks. (See school calendar for schedule) Teachers will enthusiastically engage students in exploring topics of interest in a non-graded setting. Students will apply skills they have learned in academic subjects, but the goal in offering Power Hour is to explore areas of interest, gain new knowledge and realize that life long learning should not always be graded as a subject, but taught and learned enthusiastically, building on the interest and knowledge of the participants.

Each teacher will teach their topics for two terms, unless student interest on the survey indicates they should select another topic.

Students will be able to choose one session each term. A student survey will be given to every student allowing them to rank their class preferences. Although power hour is a required course for all students, student selection of courses will allow them to explore areas of interest. This year (2008-09) fifth and sixth graders will have the opportunity to attend RADkid training during power hour for one term. More information on the RADkid Program may be accessed on the website or by contacting RADkid coordinator Alli Parker. If parents are interested in participating in Power Hour they may contact their classroom teachers or Principal Shepard.
